Smoke generators create a protective glycerin mist that retains heat and protects plants from radiation frosts at critical times.
On clear, windless nights, the soil and crown lose heat rapidly due to radiation to the sky, and plant temperatures can drop to dangerous levels. At such times, it is important not to "add heat" but to reduce heat loss so that plantings cool down more slowly and pass the cold peak without critical damage.
The use of smoke generators is especially important on clear and windless nights, when the risk of frost is high and plants are most vulnerable. These devices provide reliable protection, allowing gardeners to preserve crops and reduce losses, making them indispensable agronomic aids.
The range includes three machines: Aeolus covering 0.5 ha, Boreas — 1.5 ha, and Poseidon — 4 ha.
The typical scenario is a radiation frost: a clear night, light wind, dry air, and a forecast below 0 °C precisely during bloom and fruit set. During the day it may still feel “spring-warm,” so the risk is often underestimated.
If the cold arrives as a “wave” with strong wind (an advective frost), fog alone may not be enough. In that case, the system is usually considered part of a set of measures rather than the only barrier.
