Understanding radiative frost and the role of wind

Radiation frosts occur on clear, calm nights when the soil and crown lose heat, creating a cold layer of air. Under such conditions, it is important not just to warm the plants, but to effectively remove the cold air stagnation, equalizing the temperature in the flowering zone to protect the crop.

Wind machines create a circular airflow that brings warm air down from high above, mixing it with cold air near the ground. This helps maintain an optimal temperature around the flowers, minimizing the risk of damage. While initial costs can be high, the ease of maintenance and self-contained operation of these systems provide a payback on the first frost.

Iveco engine

IVECO N67 MNT engine: 6 cylinders, 173 hp at 2200 rpm, diesel. Turbocharging and an intercooler help maintain stable torque under load so the propeller runs smoothly. In essence it is a power unit designed for long duty cycles in the field.

Chinook propeller

Two-blade composite-fiber system: the material is lighter than steel yet strong. The one-piece flexible blade design reduces the risk of breakage in gusts, and the hub is CNC-machined for precise fit. The blade profile is built for minimal area with maximum fuel-efficiency effect, and an epoxy coating protects the surface.

Cabin

Seamless modular cabin with a housing that opens and closes, making access to components easier for inspection and service. Electrostatic powder coating keeps the exterior durable in seasonal operation. A 500 L fuel tank is located under the engine, ducts route engine heat away, and a two-stage interlock system is provided.

Propeller gearbox

The cast gearbox housing resists vibration, and precision surfaces are produced on CNC machines. The lower and upper transmissions turn the drive by 90 degrees, and the bearing-shift mechanism allows the propeller to rotate 360 degrees around the tower axis. Bevel gears are made from wear- and heat-resistant materials; gear ratios are selected for the required torque and blade speed to ensure proper air circulation.

Tower

The tower is made from a 10.4 m spiral-welded tube and reinforced with increased wall thickness. Hot-dip galvanizing improves corrosion resistance for outdoor use. For service there is a steel ladder, grounding with reinforced anchors, and four access hatches on the tower.

Control panel

Murphy control panel with a simple display running Turkish software. There is an information screen and a fault notification screen, which is convenient for monitoring without constant presence near the machine. Automatic and manual modes are supported, but in typical use it is enough to set it up and let the system run on its own.

Vibration sensor

The sensor monitors vibrations that are most often caused by mechanical faults or blade imbalance. If deviations become critical, it shuts the machine down, reducing the risk of a developing failure. It also acts as additional protection to prevent starting the unit during wind gusts.

Anemometer

The anemometer monitors natural wind: at high speeds it will stop the machine if it is already running and will prevent a start if it is stopped. This helps protect components from gust overloads. Wind readings can be viewed via remote monitoring.

Solar panel

The solar panel and voltage regulator charge the battery and help extend its service life. This simplifies starting after a long idle period when the machine has not been operating. The control system is also powered from the panel.
